Gini Index Says India is Equal But What’s the Ground Reality

The Gini Index claims India is one of the world's most equal societies, with a score of 25.5. But does this match the Ground Reality?
Data shows India's top 1% population holds 22.6% of the national income, while our large informal economy isn't fully reflected. We also face a significant Digital Divide, with only about 50% of schools having internet access. In rural areas, the gap is even wider, with only 25% of women having access compared to nearly 50% of men.
This highlights the true challenge: wealth concentration, gender inequality, and differences in digital and education access. While the Gini Index gives one perspective, real progress depends on tackling these multiple dimensions of inequality.
The good news? India has reduced extreme poverty from 16.2% to 2.3% in a decade—a big achievement! But true development comes from addressing all forms of inequality, not just one.
