Q1.
What provision was sanctioned by the Charter Act of 1813?
  1. ABan on child labour
  2. BRailways in India
  3. CIntroduction of western sciences
(Doctrine of Lapse)
Show answer

Concept: The Charter Act of 1813 renewed the East India Company’s charter for 20 years.

  1. It ended the Company’s trade monopoly in India (except tea and trade with China).
  2. It set aside ₹1 lakh every year for education – for reviving literature and for introducing and promoting knowledge of the sciences (western sciences) among Indians.
  3. Doctrine of Lapse came with Dalhousie (1848) and railways in 1853, so they do not fit 1813.

Yaad rakhein: 1813 = ₹1 lakh for education + missionaries allowed + monopoly ended (except tea and China).

Answer: (C) Introduction of western sciences

Q39.
The marked price of a wardrobe is ₹668, which is 22% above the cost price. If the profit percentage is 7%, find the discount percentage (rounded off to two decimal places).
  1. A9.52%
  2. B12.30%
  3. C9.87%
  4. D11.79%
Show answer

Concept: Take CP =100. Then MP=122 and SP=107; Discount%=MP−SPMP×100.

  1. MP=100+22=122, SP=100+7=107.
  2. Discount =122−107=15.
  3. Discount%=15122×100≈12.295%≈12.30%.
  4. The actual price ₹668 is not needed.

Trick: Discount% =m−p100+m×100=22−7122×100.

Answer: (B) 12.30%

Q68.
Select the set in which the numbers are related in the same way as are the numbers of the following sets.
(NOTE: Operations should be performed on the whole numbers, without breaking down the numbers into their constituent digits. E.g. 13 – Operations on 13 such as
adding/subtracting/multiplying to 13 can be performed. Breaking down 13 into 1 and 3 and then performing mathematical operations on 1 and 3 is not allowed.)
(41, 34, 24)
(63, 80, 23)
(41, 34, 24)
(63, 80, 23)
  1. A(46, 86, 24)
  2. B(43, 40, 23)
  3. C(17, 14, 11)
  4. D(17, 2, 19)
Show answer

Concept: Find one rule linking the three numbers that works for both given sets.

  1. (41, 34, 24): 41−24=17 and 17×2=34.
  2. (63, 80, 23): 63−23=40 and 40×2=80.
  3. Rule: second number =2×(first−third).
  4. (43, 40, 23): 43−23=20, 20×2=40 ✓. Others fail, e.g. (46, 86, 24): 2×22=44≠86.

Trick: Middle number is always even and here equals twice the gap between the outer numbers.
